UBCPC Endorsements for AMS Elections

As the voting ballots continue to cast UBC students’ votes for the AMS elections, UBC Persian Club announces its endorsements for the following candidates:

Vote Bahador Moosavi for AMS VP Academic and University Affairs

UBC Persian Club is proud to be supporting Bahador Moosavi to be elected as our AMS VP Academic and University Affairs in the upcoming year. Being a UBC Persian Club member himself, he has long been involved with activities concerning the Iranian students on campus and has contributed significantly to our community. One of his most major contributions to the Iranian community has been starting a successful campaign which eventually led to foundation of “Iranian Studies and Persian Language Initiative” at UBC. Bahador has also been heavily involved with student teams and both AMS and GSS in the past. As Bahador is in one of most contested races this year and really needs our support, we would like to strongly encourage our members and the Iranian student body to support Bahador in this campaign, both as a passionate Iranian and a great leader (not mentioning his extraordinary acting and singing talents)!

Vote Malileh Noghrekar for UBC Senate

Having served as president of our club for almost a year, Malileh has now taken a bigger step towards contributing to the Iranian community, as well as the UBC student body, in a larger scale. Malileh’s leadership skills and vision for positive change does not need much elaboration on, as it is quite evident in the performance of the club in the past year. We believe that her exposure to issues concerning Iranian students can make her a great representative of the Iranian community in Senate; and her passion, original ideas and effective leadership abilities will much be appreciated on our student Senate. We passionately ask our members and the Iranian community to support Malileh and vote for her as our representative on Senate.

UBC Persian Club Endorsements for AMS President/Board of Governors Candidates

UBC Persian Club would also like to announce its full endorsement of the AMS President Candidate, Matt Parson and Board of Governors candidates, Sumedha Sharma and Tagg Jefferson in the Elections. Matt, Sumedha and Tagg have proven to be passionate and caring about student and club issues and are willing to work with us in issues concerning the Iranian community on campus. We encourage our members to vote for Matt, Sumedha and Tagg as their AMS President and representatives on Board of Governors. We would also like to mention and thank another BoG candidate, Mike Silley, who has contributed significantly to the student body in the past year in his role as AMS VP Administration.

A Night with Hossein Amanat

Hossein Amanat established his reputation as a young graduate in 1966 by winning a nationwide competition to design the Shahyad Freedom Monument (Azaadi Square) in Tehran, which has since become the symbol of modern Iran. This first architectural project led to the opportunity to create some of Iran’s most prestigious modern buildings including handicraft centres, universities, libraries and a town on the Caspian Sea. He also designed the embassy of Iran in Beijing, one of the distinguished buildings in the diplomatic quarter of that city.

Since moving to Canada in 1980, Hossein’s practice has expanded and diversified. He has designed the World Administrative Center of the Baha’i Faith in Haifa, Israel, university libraries and factories in China, mixed-use high-rise buildings in San Diego, residential condominiums in Santa Monica, a temple in Samoa, religious and cultural centers near Dallas, Seattle and Washington, D.C. and residential dwellings in Canada and California. He recently completed a transit-oriented mixed commercial and residential high-rise project along the Vancouver mass-transit line.

In all his projects, Amanat demonstrates his particular skill for the application and combination of diverse cultural themes in the creation of distinctive designs. He has received numerous design awards and has lectured extensively on art and architecture at cultural and educational institutions and conferences.

Join us for a night of interactive lecture and talk with Hossein Amanat and find out more about his works, experiences and vision and perspectives on architecture.

Lecture is free and open to the public. This lecture is presented in English.

Yalda Night Celebration

The University of British Columbia Persian Club invites students and Iranians to get together and celebrate the longest night of the year.
UBC Persian club is proud to present Yalda night accompanied by eminent figures in the field of Iranian culture and arts. Your presence is crucial since it would be a support to help us keep our ancient culture alive.
The Ceremony is as follows:

A brief talk about Yalda night and its significance in Iranian Culture
Declaiming Hafez Poems
Shahnameh Story-telling
Persian Traditional/Folklore music performed by UBC Persian ensemble
Serving of traditional dried fruit and pastry specific to Yalda night

The programs will be both in Farsi and English.

Join us at UBC Persian Club’s Fall 2011 Annual General Meeting (AGM) and After-Party (Persian Pit Night) for a fun night with your fellow UBCPCers.

If you want to know more about the club, get more heavily involved, speak out about your innovative ideas, meet and challenge your executive team or simply have a fun night with your fellow students, this is the right place for you!

Fall 2011 AGM is club-wide meeting where executives give their reports about recent developments and achievements of the club and plans for the months to come; and members get an opportunity to raise their concerns, questions and suggestions about the club.

Poetry Night with Houshang Ebtehaj (Saayeh) – 2nd event

As you may know, the event “Poetry Night with Houshang Ebtehaj (Saayeh)” was sold out on September 18th. Due to the large demand from the community and increasing interest in this event, UBC Asian Studies Department (Persian Language and Iranian Studies Initiative) in collaboration with UBC Persian Club planned to host a second poetry night with Mr. Ebtehaj, and Saayeh kindly agreed to it.

This effort has been made in hopes of giving another opportunity to those who were unable to obtain their tickets for the first event; to come and spend a night with Saayeh and celebrate Iranian poetry with the rest of us.

This event is to be held on Thursday, September 29th, 2011 at UBC Point Grey Campus. As tickets are going away very quickly, please make sure to act fast and get your tickets as soon as possible to avoid later disappointments.

UBCPC Grouse Grind

Feel like you’re not fully enjoying Vancouver’s lovely summer weather?

Join in our weekly Grouse Grind hiking program and enjoy the nice weather, incredible scenery and the group-hiking with fellow UBCPCers!

Every Sunday morning, we will gather in the warm-up space at the base of the mountain and will warm ourselves up for 30 minutes and then hit the Grouse at 9. Please Note that we start hiking right at 9:00am; so, please be on time, or else you would have to climb it all by yourself!

Also, you can join our Facebook Grouse Grind Group to cheer up and upload your pictures!

We wholeheartedly encourage all of our members to come out and vote. Remember that this is your chance to choose the way you want UBCPC to be; after all: “This is Your Club, and it should be run “Your Way”!

UBC Persian Club as “the home to Persian students at the University of British Columbia”, while standing on a solid foundation as a result of efforts of previous executive teams, can flourish and reach its potential to the fullest as a student club. This progress will take place by:

Maintaining a balance in the use of the club resources to satisfy a broader spectrum of needs and interests of Persian- and ideally non-persian- students. This is especially important in the need to allocate more resources to cultural events.

Attempt to bring in a greater degree of innovation to the club’s activities and events

Allocation of more resources to promote Persian culture in campus and attract more non-persian students

Attempt to increase the openness of the club to use outside resources and ideas which would result in attracting more students and increase their sense of belongingness to the club, and increase the innovation and diversity.

Farhad Salarian Zadeh

I believe it is time for us to expand UBCPC beyond its limit and transform it into a powerful SOCIETY from a club, which is the least of what Persians deserve to have in UBC. I believe with my courage, experience (executive member of University of Manchester Persian society for more than two years) and commitment I can lead UBCPC to achieve the following goals:

Promoting our culture by organizing enriched cultural events through cultural lectures and talks, traditional music concerts, movies, documentaries, shows, exhibitions and etc.

Forming and registering a Farsi language class in UBC.

Creating the opportunity for those students who have specific talents and skills with which they might like to earn money by teaching other students or utilize their talents and skills in any useful way.

Improving the financial power of our club by attracting and getting more sponsors as well as enhancing our financial system.

Expanding the size of UBCPC through more and better advertisements in order to increase our members as well as our executive members.

Forming the fusion music band of UBCPC.

Form and register a UBCPC tennis team (and any other potential sport team), which can play in the league.

Forming a stronger bond between Persians by organizing a broad range of social events such as movie, karaoke and game nights as well as social gatherings for different occasions.

Organizing a broad range of sport and game events such as soccer, tennis, volleyball, poker and etc.

Bringing more creativity and excitement into our parties such as having live music or dance performances.

I believe a great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.
