A Night with Hossein Amanat

Hossein Amanat established his reputation as a young graduate in 1966 by winning a nationwide competition to design the Shahyad Freedom Monument (Azaadi Square) in Tehran, which has since become the symbol of modern Iran. This first architectural project led to the opportunity to create some of Iran’s most prestigious modern buildings including handicraft centres, universities, libraries and a town on the Caspian Sea. He also designed the embassy of Iran in Beijing, one of the distinguished buildings in the diplomatic quarter of that city.

Since moving to Canada in 1980, Hossein’s practice has expanded and diversified. He has designed the World Administrative Center of the Baha’i Faith in Haifa, Israel, university libraries and factories in China, mixed-use high-rise buildings in San Diego, residential condominiums in Santa Monica, a temple in Samoa, religious and cultural centers near Dallas, Seattle and Washington, D.C. and residential dwellings in Canada and California. He recently completed a transit-oriented mixed commercial and residential high-rise project along the Vancouver mass-transit line.

In all his projects, Amanat demonstrates his particular skill for the application and combination of diverse cultural themes in the creation of distinctive designs. He has received numerous design awards and has lectured extensively on art and architecture at cultural and educational institutions and conferences.

Join us for a night of interactive lecture and talk with Hossein Amanat and find out more about his works, experiences and vision and perspectives on architecture.

Lecture is free and open to the public. This lecture is presented in English.

Yalda Night Celebration

The University of British Columbia Persian Club invites students and Iranians to get together and celebrate the longest night of the year.
UBC Persian club is proud to present Yalda night accompanied by eminent figures in the field of Iranian culture and arts. Your presence is crucial since it would be a support to help us keep our ancient culture alive.
The Ceremony is as follows:

A brief talk about Yalda night and its significance in Iranian Culture
Declaiming Hafez Poems
Shahnameh Story-telling
Persian Traditional/Folklore music performed by UBC Persian ensemble
Serving of traditional dried fruit and pastry specific to Yalda night

The programs will be both in Farsi and English.

Join us at UBC Persian Club’s Fall 2011 Annual General Meeting (AGM) and After-Party (Persian Pit Night) for a fun night with your fellow UBCPCers.

If you want to know more about the club, get more heavily involved, speak out about your innovative ideas, meet and challenge your executive team or simply have a fun night with your fellow students, this is the right place for you!

Fall 2011 AGM is club-wide meeting where executives give their reports about recent developments and achievements of the club and plans for the months to come; and members get an opportunity to raise their concerns, questions and suggestions about the club.

Later at night we will head to the the PitPub to celebrate a half-term of hard work and fun!

Poetry Night with Houshang Ebtehaj (Saayeh) – 2nd event

As you may know, the event “Poetry Night with Houshang Ebtehaj (Saayeh)” was sold out on September 18th. Due to the large demand from the community and increasing interest in this event, UBC Asian Studies Department (Persian Language and Iranian Studies Initiative) in collaboration with UBC Persian Club planned to host a second poetry night with Mr. Ebtehaj, and Saayeh kindly agreed to it.

This effort has been made in hopes of giving another opportunity to those who were unable to obtain their tickets for the first event; to come and spend a night with Saayeh and celebrate Iranian poetry with the rest of us.

This event is to be held on Thursday, September 29th, 2011 at UBC Point Grey Campus. As tickets are going away very quickly, please make sure to act fast and get your tickets as soon as possible to avoid later disappointments.

Also, you can come to UBC Persian Club’s new office at the SUB (Student Union Building) to pick up your tickets. We will be in our office on Monday and Tuesday from 2pm-4pm to serve you with the tickets.

Poetry Night with Houshang Ebtehaj (Saayeh)

Having dedicated himself to his art for six decades, Sayeh (Amir Houshang Ebthaj) has shown great perseverance in writing unfettered poems. A renowned poet of conscience, he has been an inspirational and unstoppable force for his country and its people in the age of totalitarian governments exercising brutal and vicious political, social and religious control over Iranian citizens. His deceptively simple poems – loaded with sublime allegories, penetrating ironies, visual images, sober elegies, literary allusions and masterly juxtapositions – evoke powerful mental pictures. The wide spectrum of his poetic work ranges from classic rhymed lyrics (ghazals) to modern blank verse delving into the Iranian psyche.
For an unforgettable meditative experience of joy and beauty, come to Kay Meek Centre, 1700 Mathers Ave. West Vancouver, on September 25 for an evening of music and poetry with this iconic Persian poet.

Feel like you’re not fully enjoying Vancouver’s lovely summer weather?

Join in our weekly Grouse Grind hiking program and enjoy the nice weather, incredible scenery and the group-hiking with fellow UBCPCers!

Every Sunday morning, we will gather in the warm-up space at the base of the mountain and will warm ourselves up for 30 minutes and then hit the Grouse at 9. Please Note that we start hiking right at 9:00am; so, please be on time, or else you would have to climb it all by yourself!

Norouz (Iranian New Year) Festival at UBC

Wednesday, March 16 at 10:00am – March 18 at 7:00pm

Come celebrate Norouz with us this year (Persian/Iranian New Year, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nowruz) on UBC campus. There are several fun and informative activities planned on March 16th through 18th for your pleasure.

A more detailed plan will be announced shortly but here’s a sneak peak:

- The Haft-Seen (7 S’s): A haft-seen will be setup at the SUB.
…
- Art Display: Some masterpieces by local Iranian Canadian artists will be on display from Wednesday through Friday. Location to be announced shortly.

- Movie Screening: The White Balloon (Badkonake Sefid) will be screened!

- There will be talks to introduce different aspects of the Iranian culture and arts by prominent art icons in the city.

- Also, on Friday, a grand event will take place just outside the SUB, where several music and dance performances will be performed! Come out and enjoy some Persian Pop and Rock music and dance all day! Don’t worry about the weather, if it rains we’ll move everything to the SUB main concourse!

** All the details, including exact location and time will be announced shortly, we just wanted to make sure you mark this event in your calendar. If you have any midterms on these days, ask your profs in the beginning of the term to change them, so that you can come out and celebrate Norouz.
